May Is Mental Health Awareness Month

by Marisa Papa

May marks Mental Health Awareness Month and is a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health issues and reducing the stigma surrounding mental health. Throughout the month of May, many organizations & companies host events and campaigns to shine a light on mental health and offer support and resources for those who may be struggling. I’m grateful to work at an agency that prioritizes our mental health all year long, and not only supports work/life balance, but empowers us to create and embrace it.

Finding an outlet that positively impacts your mind and body is key to improving your overall well-being throughout the year, not just in the month of May when it’s top of mind and being highlighted within media. For me, that’s been exercise. I’ve rounded up a few ways that exercise helps me to be the best version of myself below!

  • Mood-Booster – You heard it from Elle Woods herself in Legally Blonde, “Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy….” – you know the rest! Starting my day off with a workout, whether it be a HIIT class, a long run, strength training, or a spin class, prepares me for the rest of my to-do list that day, both during the work week and on weekends.
  • Better Sleep – A good night’s sleep makes for a good day, and engaging in regular exercise promotes better sleep quality, resulting in enhanced cognitive function and better moods.
  • Social Interaction – The fitness industry truly offers a sense of community. Whether you attend group fitness classes, work out solo at the gym, are part of a run club, or are on the Pickleball court, you’re never truly alone. Participating in group fitness and surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals with similar hobbies can provide opportunities to make new friends, and make you enjoy your physical activity even more.
  • Setting Boundaries – It’s easy to get caught up in your daily tasks at work, school, or at home, and some may find it difficult to fully ‘unplug’ after a long day. My personal favorite? Setting my phone to ‘do not disturb’ and taking time after the day to get some movement in. This gives me the chance to unwind after the day and really focus.

The benefits of physical activity extend far beyond the gym; incorporating regular exercise will elevate your mood, reduce stress, help you feel less overwhelmed, and enable you to reach your fullest potential.
